Have you visited your business Facebook page recently? If not you may be surprised to find that Facebook Business Pages have undergone a big change. Here’s what you need to know in order to keep a professional image in front of your customers and maintain those hard-earned friends and followers.

On March 30, 2012 Facebook switched all business pages over to the new Timeline layout. While the new look may surprise some there are some great new features to help you convert Facebook visitors into customers, including:

• A more visual layout with a large “cover” image designed to communicate the style of your business;
• A Timeline to organize your posts or even the history and milestones of your business over time;
• The ability for visitors to contact your business directly through your Facebook page;
• Visitor comments that can be moderated;
• Featured story posts that can be highlighted or “pinned” to the top of your page;
• User-friendly admin tools that enable you to more easily promote your business to a broad Facebook audience.

The most noticeable change is the large area for a “cover” image. Mouse over the photo box and upload a image that will best convey the feel and style of your business. The ideal size is 851 x 315 pixels. Your cover photo will then appear behind your logo. There are some important restrictions on the use of a cover image however, including the following:

•  Your cover photo should primarily be an image, not text, and cannot include references to pricing or discount offer information such as “50% Off” or “Limited Time Offer.”
• The cover photo cannot contain invitations to “Like”, “Contact” or select an interactive element on your page or have any other calls to action.
• The image cannot include contact information, phone numbers, email addresses or web addresses. Theses are better suited for the About section of your business page. Remember – the cover photo is designed to capture the spirit and image of your business.

The new Facebook Timeline layout now features more information about your business “above-the-fold” including placing favorites and business information just below the cover photo so that your visitors do not have to scroll to learn about your products and services.

If you haven’t done so already, take a moment to visit your business page, upload a cover photo, customize your app and favorites images, and pin some updated content to the top of your page. You’ll quickly grow to like the new changes and probably find that the new Facebook Timeline layout connects with customers even better than your old page.
